As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the two main species of squirrels found in London, United Kingdom, are the Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and the Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). Here are some details about each:
Description: The grey squirrel is larger than the red squirrel and has distinctive grey fur, although its coloration can vary from silver-grey to dark grey.
Habitat: Grey squirrels are highly adaptable and have thrived in both urban and rural environments. They are commonly found in parks, gardens, woodlands, and even residential areas.
Behavior: Grey squirrels are known for their agility and climbing abilities. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming a variety of foods, including nuts, seeds, fruits, and even bird eggs.
Status: Grey squirrels are not native to the UK and were introduced in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They have, to some extent, displaced native red squirrels in certain areas.

Description: Red squirrels are smaller than grey squirrels and have red or reddish-brown fur. They also have distinctive ear tufts.
Habitat: While once widespread, the red squirrel has seen a decline in its population, particularly in England and Wales, due to competition with the grey squirrel and the spread of the squirrelpox virus.
Behavior: Red squirrels are also skilled climbers and foragers. They prefer coniferous woodlands but can adapt to various habitats.
Conservation Status: Red squirrels are considered native to the UK, and conservation efforts are in place to protect and conserve their remaining populations.
It’s important to note that the grey squirrel is more prevalent and widespread in London and many other parts of the UK. Conservationists work to protect and support red squirrel populations where they still exist, often in more isolated or specific regions.
For the most up-to-date information on the types of squirrels in London, you may want to check with local wildlife organizations, nature reserves, or conservation authorities. Additionally, regulations and information may have evolved since my last update in January 2022.
Posted on Google Alan N6 July 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I used RapidKill Pest Control for a cockroach infestation at a property in Edgware. Danish, who attended the same day, was very polite and helpful, and provided a very thorough treatment using a combination of gels and traps. He has just completed his second follow up visit where it was clear that the treatment plan had been very effective. I would not hestitate to use RapidKill Pest Control again should I ever require their services in the future.Posted on Google Tony Wilson26 June 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. There are several reasons why removing squirrels from a property may be necessary:
It’s important to note that while squirrels are a natural part of the environment and play a role in ecosystems, conflicts arise when they inhabit spaces that are in close proximity to
human residences. In cases where their presence poses risks or causes damage, professional removal and prevention services can help address the issue effectively and humanely.
Pest control professionals will conduct a thorough inspection of the property to identify signs of squirrel activity, entry points, nesting sites, and the extent of the infestation. This may include checking attics, crawl spaces, roofs, and other areas where squirrels may be present.
Identification of Entry Points: Locating and sealing entry points is crucial to prevent further access by squirrels. Pest control experts will identify openings, gaps, or vulnerable areas where squirrels may be entering the building.

How we control squirrels: Squirrel removal by pest control professionals typically involves a systematic process to identify, trap, and exclude the squirrels from the affected area. Here’s a general overview of how pest control experts approach squirrel removal
Trapping: Trapping is a common method used for squirrel removal. Pest control professionals
Yes. RapidKill Pest Control offers professional squirrels removal and proofing services throughout all London boroughs—safe, humane, and IPM-compliant to protect your home and peace of mind.
Standard squirrel control starts from £280 (including VAT), which covers a survey and 2–3 visits for removal and proofing, depending on infestation size.
Look for: scratching or rustling in lofts or walls, droppings, urine smells, chewed insulation, buried nuts in your garden, and squirrels seen near your attic or roofline.
Grey squirrels chew wood, wires, pipes and insulation, causing fire hazards and structural damage. They can also carry fleas, ticks, and transmit diseases like salmonella and leptospirosis.
We perform an inspection, then use humane live-traps or one-way exclusion devices to remove squirrels. After removal, we proof by sealing entry points—like vents, soffits, and pipe chases—to prevent return.
Absolutely. We use humane, non-toxic methods. Once squirrels are removed and re-entry points sealed, your home is safe—no poisons are used indoors.
Not if proofing is done correctly. Our service includes sealing with steel wool, flashing or mesh, and follow-up within 10 days to confirm all access points remain secure.
Yes. Trim trees so branches are 6 ft from your roof, seal gaps (e.g. vents), avoid bird feeders, and consider repellents like hot pepper spray or predator scents while awaiting professional proofing.
You can humanely trap grey squirrels for proofing purposes, but relocation is illegal, and rodenticides/poisons aren’t permitted. Professionals must follow UK wildlife regulations.
We’re BPCA-accredited, RSPH-certified, fully insured—and use humane, legally compliant methods. Our expert removal, secure proofing, and follow-ups ensure long-term peace of mind.
